Project Overview

I was invited to present Media, Messaging, and Movement: How Stories Influence Advocacy at the Texas Association Against Sexual Assault’s annual conference. The workshop explored the intersections of media, culture, and advocacy, equipping participants with tools to critically analyze harmful narratives and strengthen their prevention campaigns.

Approach

The session combined interactive exercises, group analysis, and guided discussion, including:

  • Bias recognition and stereotype mapping activities

  • Media clip deconstruction and cultural critique

  • Story-building and campaign design exercises

Objectives

  • Gauge participants’ current media literacy and advocacy practices

  • Build skills in identifying bias, stereotypes, and propaganda in media

  • Explore digital storytelling and design strategies for outreach

  • Provide practical frameworks for integrating media analysis into prevention programs

Outcomes

  • Increased participant confidence in applying critical media literacy to advocacy work

  • Strengthened understanding of how narratives influence public perception of violence and prevention

  • Identification of practical steps participants could take to integrate new skills into ongoing initiatives

  • Fostered connections with prevention leaders across Texas, with interest in continued collaborations
